A common mistake I see my patients making is leaving it too long before seeking help for dental issues. Emergency dental issues can often be resolved quickly, however many people delay seeing a dentist, and the problem only worsens. So, with that in mind, here are 5 signs that you should seek dental care urgently.
If you’ve chipped or cracked a tooth, it’s crucial that you have it looked at quickly. If you leave a chipped or cracked tooth untreated, it can lead to more serious problems such as split teeth, damage to the root canal, decay and infections. Above all else, even a small chip in your tooth leaves you susceptible to further chips or cracks occurring with only minimal impact.
So many patients, unfortunately, ignore a toothache, hoping it will just go away. On rare occasions, the pain does subside, however, that pain could be a sign of a more serious problem. One of the most common causes of toothaches is an impacted wisdom tooth, which should be treated as soon as possible. Tooth pain could also be a sign of cavities or gum disease. These issues can lead to infections, which increase pain, create bad breath and cause other oral hygiene problems.
Gums are bleeding or in pain
Generally, if you have a small amount of bleeding from the gums as an isolated incident, it’s not too much to worry about. However, regular bleeding from the gums or pain in the gums is a more serious issue. It wouldn’t surprise many to know that painful or bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease. When left untreated, this can cause a whole range of problems for your teeth.
If gum disease progresses to more serious stages, you could be looking at expensive surgery such as tissue and bone grafts or even bone surgery. Catching it early may mean the condition can be treated with more regular cleaning or only minor dental surgery.
Losing a tooth
While it’s a bit of fun for kids to lose their teeth as they grow, it’s not the same scenario for adults. Once you’ve got all of your adult teeth, they should stay right where they are. However, accidents involving impact can cause a tooth to be knocked loose. It’s particularly common in car accidents or sporting incidents.
Aside from ruining your smile, a loose or missing tooth can result in infections or decay to surrounding teeth if the problem isn’t addressed quickly.
Abscesses are forming
Many people experience abscesses in the mouth, and they can be extremely painful. You may not experience too much trouble when just appearing on the gums, but it should still be checked – particularly if they are forming regularly. The bigger problem is when an abscess forms at the root of the tooth. If you experience fever, bad breath, noticeable signs of pus or swollen glands, you may need emergency dental care.
